What is LEED?

This is Page 2 of 8 in the Getting Started with LEED series.

LEED = Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

In short, LEED is a rating system for buildings, equivalent to a gas mileage rating for cars.  Under LEED, buildings accumulate points for things such as saving energy, having accessible mass transit, and mitigating storm water runoff.  Once the points are tallied, the building earns a LEED rating.  The higher the tally, the more sustainable a building is.

LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification system which provides third-party verification that a building or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at increasing performance, reducing waste, and improving quality of life.

The LEED rating systems, created by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), are internationally accepted benchmarks for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. Since its inception in 1998, LEED has grown to encompass more than 20,000 projects in 50 U.S. states and 30 countries. LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health. The LEED rating and certification system is the industry's gold-standard for environmentally sustainable building and is recognized industry-wide by architects, engineers, developers, and other building professionals, many of which have been designated "LEED Accredited Professional." The LEED AP designation is a highly sought-after credential by professionals in environmental sustainability roles, as well as law, real estate and other areas. That's where Everblue comes in. We make LEED APs!

LEED Certification of datacenters

  • Submitted by Roland Streber (not verified) on Wed, 02/10/2010 - 13:01.
Hi, compared to a normal administrative building what else has to be considered for a LEED certification of a datacenter? Is there a special checklist for datacenters? Whats about meetering? ....

LEED Certification depends on . . .

  • Submitted by Everblue on Sat, 02/13/2010 - 17:08.
     Roland,
LEED Certification can be achieved for nearly any building type.  If you are building new construction then you have to demonstrate energy savings over a baseline energy model.  If you are looking to certify under the Operations & Maintenance standard then you have to show year over year reduction in energy costs.  LEED O&M is harder because you actually have to document (usually through sub-metering) your energy efficiency improvements.  We'd be happy to consult with you if you need any assistance on a specific project.

LEED Certification for Commercial Plants

  • Submitted by Everblue on Thu, 03/25/2010 - 09:36.

You asked about LEED Certification for commercial plants. LEED does apply to commercial plants. There are two types of applicable LEED Certification. The first is during the construction or major renovation phase when you can certify the design & construction processes. The second type if during the operation of the facility. I encourage you to attend our LEED Green Associate training which provides you with an in depth understanding of the LEED ratings and the LEED project process.

    James,

As a utility sub-contractor there are many LEED credits that apply to you and your company's work. For example, erosion control, site disturbance, waste management, and product source are all areas where LEED would impact your operations. In our LEED Exam prep courses we provide a credit by credit review of the LEED project requirements. These classes not only help you pass the exam but will also help you on your projects as well.

A few contractors have told me about some kind of certification class for specialty tradesmens such as roofing with attic ventilation applications, siding installers and replacement window installers? Is there something like this and if so what classes and steps should I take to go about this?

LEED for Tradesmen

  • Submitted by admin on Mon, 06/07/2010 - 14:37.
    Robert,

The LEED Accreditation credentials really stress a whole building approach which is why the professional LEED Exams test you on all aspects of the building process. This means that there are specialty credentials for each of the building trades.

I would encourage you to look into the LEED Green Associate as it provides you the best overview and introduction for LEED.
